Naggy Nonags

Back when I was a serious download freak, always looking for that little app that’d make it all right, Nonags was one of my favorite haunts. They listed only freeware and well-behaved, no-nags shareware. The design was accordingly simple and unobtrusive (though quirky). How weird then that now when trying to download something you’re taken to one of those infamous “Your-download-should-start-automatically” pages, full of Google ads that don’t stand a chance of being remotely relevant (relevant to what? the “invitation” to join Nonag plus?). Worst, the cheapest, lowliest possible kind of popup (party poker! your computer is at risk!) creeps underhandedly (that is, hides beneath your current window).
It would be ironic, were it not sad.

I have been visiting Nonags since 1996, and in that 13 year history of at least twice a week visits I have seen one popup, that was maybe about 4 years ago, I remember I wrote the webmaster about it and he told me it was from a new ad agency that promised no popups and he removed them. I have never seen another popup yet, as for google ads, well, they have to make some money to pay for their bills, most people have filters and see nothing anyway. But I think your public dissing of a site that for the last 14 years still does what it believes it’s right and hasn’t sold to the commercialization like almost ALL others have is at least unfortunate.
